Give me any scripture, and I'll give you a wild - yet spiritually grounded - interpretation.

I too have always wondered about about this passage in the bible.
I do know that the Lord takes vows seriously.
I once was at a point in my marriage that was failing, and was counseled to get a divorce, and I prayed about it, and asked the "Lord do I get a divorce"? And he said "NO" I asked why? and he said because " "Im faithful"
Wither he killed his daughter or not, and I myself in hoping that he did not......
But vows and promises that we make as Christians, we do need to be faithful in them.

'Great "story"! (account)
'Sound just like something He's say.

James 5:12
But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath;
but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment.

Marriage vows are ordained, but they are to be honored and not entered into lightly.
The same for being sworn into office and such.
Other sorts of vows should be avoided, because vows are binding.

The people of that day (and way back into the OT) were in the habit of making vows all the time without thinking.
Just as people today say "Oh G*d!" (even just the initials "OMG) all the time - not realizing that is invoking His name (well, OK: His title) without purpose - in vain.

It may seem petty to us, but like you said, Michelle, God keeps His promises - His vows and He expects us to as well.
