Matthew 5:10Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. 13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Any reference to this salt story is about being a witness in the face of persecution. One could apply verse 13 about a witness that is running in the way the world runs.

1 Peter 4: 3For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: 5Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.

So if one imagines a believer doing the same thing that sinners are doing, then anything they say about the Gospel will be trodden underfoot by men because the believer is doing the same thing that sinners are doing.

I think Jesus was referring to the fact that, if Christians, i.e. "the salt of the earth" are hypocritical or lose their faith, then they (the salt) has lost their flavor, meaning their credibility and/or their worthiness to God.
