I don't think too many people thought Jeep, Ram and Dodge were in trouble.

The brands people are questioning the future of are Fiat (in the US market) and Chrysler.

If the article mentioned additional investment in either Fiat in the US or Chrysler, I may have missed it and apologize in advance.

It makes sense that a new plant is being built. Jeep is incredibly profitable and popular not just in the US but abroad as well.

The JGC and new three-row SUV (Wagoneer?) will probabably be on a totally new platform, and it sounds like one or both of them will have some electrification to them. The upgrades to the current facility are needed.

What is a "white space" vehicle?

The search to exploit new vehicle segments, called “white space” is becoming an obsession in the auto industry as OEMs struggle to continue growing sales as consumers lose interest in traditional sedans in all sizes and price ranges.

The North Assembly Plant would receive an investment of $900 million to retool and modernize the facility to build the Dodge Durango and next generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, which would create 1,100 new jobs at the plant, FCA officials announced.

The reborn Mack facility would be the first new assembly plant built in Detroit in nearly three decades, FCA officials said.

Statements on FCA announcement
Here are some statements released by officials and companies about this FCA announcement.

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel:

"Once again, Macomb County is at the epicenter of the evolution of the auto industry. FCA’s announcement of $1.9 billion dollars of investment and nearly 1,500 new jobs at Warren Truck, Warren Stamping and Sterling Stamping showcases the company’s future-focused strategy. It is also a testament to the abilities of our talented workforce, who will now be charged with building exciting new products and advancing automotive technology and capabilities. Thank you Mike Manley, FCA and their talented workforce for believing in Michigan."

They can build all the plants they want, but until their quality increases they are just another mediocre builder of vehicles.

Which was nobody. Chysler the brand, sure, it's on borrowed time and soon to go the same way as Chrysler the company.

Hate all you want but needing more factories means something is being done right.
