We just took our Jeep on a road trip and the whole time it made a knocking sound in the engine. Now that we are home it is running very rough and the engine light has come on. Any thoughts on what it might be?

So, how many 100's of miles did you continue to drive with the engnine knocking?

Probably not your problem, but the 4L 6 / Automatic Cherokees are known to have the bolts holding the flex plate to the torque converter work loose - sounds like a rod knock or really severe piston slap, but the short term fix is just to tighten these 6 or 8 bolts.

If you mean Check Engine Light by "engine light is on", there are codes set that your local auto parts store can read for free, go from there.

Just put a higher grade gas in your vehicle.

Turns out a vaccum hose came off but that wasnt the big problem. It needs a tune up aparently and I am being told the knock sound begins with low oil pressure and that eventually we will need to replace the engine. There is nothing cost effective that can be done for that. Oh well, that is what we get for buying a Jeep!

Somebody is probably trying to sell you an engine.
But a tune-up is a good idea.

I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee V8 that knocks every once in a while, especially when I climb hills. To stop the knock, I turn off the automatic overdrive.
Bad gas will cause my engine to knock. I do use regular unleaded (not premium) and have learned which gas stations to stay away from. Premium would probably help but I can't bring myself to pay for it.

Also helpful (for me) is to add a bottle of fuel injector cleaner to a full tank and let it run almost to empty before filling it up with gas again. That took care of a lot of issues including over-revving, choking, and lurching.

Just my experience - YMMV

Thanks for the ideas. Yeah, it is running really badly right now. I hope the tune up at least takes care of that. I will get a second opinion on the engine. I am not planning on any big repairslike a new engine in the near future...I hope!

Do you check the oil level regularly? Do you change the oil? Did you let it run low? How many miles do you have on it? Has the oil pressure light ever come on?

Yes, I do change the oil pretty regularly. In fact I just had it changed a couple of weeks ago. Never let it get low and light has never come on. It has 105k on it.
