Even with all those setbacks the Bengals had the lead in the closing seconds of the game. Joe Montana threw a pass right to Lewis Billups which went right through his arms which would have stopped the drive for San Francisco and saved the game for the Bengals . That loss and the Reds loss in seven games to Oakland in the 72 World Series are the biggest losses in Cincinnati sports franchises history. At least the Reds beat the Boston Red Sox 3 years later in the thrilling 75 World Series which erased the pain of the 72 loss.

Thanks for reminding of the 72 Series. I knew there was another big one I was missing from the worst 5 losses in Cincinnati Sports. And yes, the 75 Series was sweet revenge.

The discussion of Super Bowl XXIII and Tim Krumrie's broken leg brought to my mind Bill Bergey and perhaps the worse trade the Bengals ever made. Bill signed a futures contract with the World Football League which didn't last long. This pissed Paul Brown and he traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles. One thing to be mad and another to cut off your own foot. Bergey almost single handedly brought a Super Bowl to Philadelphia. He recorded 233 tackles in a single season with the Eagles.
