OK, this is an obscure longshot . . . does anyone remember a used bookstore on McMicken Avenue in Mohawk . . . it opened ca. 1982 or so and, if I remember right, was run by a guy who taught math at Walnut Hills High School. The place was open only on Saturdays and was obviously a labor of love by the owner . . .

The place didn't even have a sign, other than a little thing in the window that read simply "Bookstore." The building was red brick, three or four stories, loaded to the gills with used books . . .

As a college student, I spent many happy hours there poking around and snarfing up the bargain books . . . was just wondering if anyone else remembered this place and if it even still existed . . .

I'm not talking about Duttenhofer's Books on McMillan Street, BTW . . . though that was a favorite haunt of mine too . . . the place I'm thinking of was fairly unknown even back in its heyday . . .

Building is still there on McMicken, sign is still there too. Not sure if it is still a going concern but if you walk on the right side of McMicken west/northwest of Ravine it is about a block and a half down.

I'll have to ask one of my Wyoming friends. He brought up that very place while I was visiting his family earlier this year. (He went to UC and also "haunted" that store.)

Thanks for the info, jrosen. And goyguy, please do report back what you find out. I'd love to revisit the place if it's still in operation . . .

I think it is pretty unlikely that anything involving books is in operation at McMicken and Ravine. The sign is still attached to the front of the building, per Google, but it looks closed.

On another note, Iris Book Cafe on Main Street between 13th and 14th is a breath of fresh air. Eclectic books and records, great food (imported from Clifton) and coffee give you the feeling that you are in San Fran and have spent 4 million dollars to live in Nob Hill and have just stepped out of your mansion for a quick cup of coffee or a sandwich at the latest trendy spot. Try it.

Amazingly, the store is still there. I stopped by on Sat on my way to Clifton. It was not open and has no regular hours any more, but a helpful neighbor working on his car next door said that the owner has another shop somewhere on Ravine up the hill and comes down on appointment to let his customers browse what is in the McMicken location. He drives a burgundy PT Cruiser, so best of luck!
