.
so San Francisco's freezing beaches are better? Nonsense.

Idk if u mean coast or waterfront...maybe they're synonyms. But for me...the answer would be Chicago. Unless you mean coast as in ocean...then I'd say Miami or San Diego.

The post said "CITY" not beaches and actually points out how they are not known for their coast/beaches. SF has a better urban fabric (City) while SD has better beaches/coast.

I agree that a large part of the NYC coast is industrial. But other parts are in a entirely natural condition. Natural enough that the Federal government created a 26,000 acrea National Park in the area --- the Gateway National Recreation Area.

NYC includes numerous small islands and peninsulas along its coast. This includes thousands of acres of marshland in Jamaica Bay, heron and egret colonies in the East River and seal resting islands off Staten Island.

One part of the NYC coast that might interest a Massachusetts guy like yourself might be Pelham Bay Park in The Bronx. Here is where New England's rocky coast begins.

Pelham Bay Park is also where Colonel John Glover lead his Massachusetts Militia from Marblehead, Massachusetts and helped save the Continental Army. During the battle of Pell's Point, Colonel (later General) Glover stood upon Glovers Rocks and helped to delay the British Army long enough for Washington's army to escape northward.

The General John Glover house (1762) still stands in Marblehead, Massachusetts and is a National Historic Landmark.
