I agree with your last statement though.
I don't see how ONE aspect such as public transit makes LA and Chicago incomparable. They both are somewhat close in population, at least more so than other cities, and both offers similar amount amenities and such. Outside of the Loop, River North, and lakefront areas Chicago actually reminded of LA in ways; lots of garden-style apartments, huge grid street pattern, strip malls, little main st-type commercial area, etc..

There's no city like L.A. Houston is as close as it gets but it doesn't have Mountains.

Columbus has several peers that are often compared to this capital city of nearly 800,000, they include:

Charlotte

as far as stature, economy, head of their regions, transportation, ports, population, education, etc.they are in a tier all by themselves in my research, nyc is all alone above them and works the world markets both politically and economically in a way they can't, and there are about 4 cities just below them in the next tier. I didn't mean in terms of looking alike or having anything in common, just that they are on the same level albeit for different reasons.

To me Charlotte feels like a smaller version of Atlanta

Tough question. Probably Houston with Phoenix a close second.
