Well I think it's because, for me at least, Minnesota not only has the Great Lake lakeshore (say that 3 times fast) but the aforementioned 10,000 lakes in it's interior that are absolutely beautiful. Or is it 9,999 when you exclude lake Superior?
I think a lot of people list New Mexico for deserts when the reality is a large portion of the state is covered with mountains, something I didn't fully grasp until I moved here, plus, much of the eastern quarter of the state is really the end of the Great Plains, just as the eastern third of Colorado is. North Central New Mexico is an extension of the end of the Rocky Mountains, then there are various other mountain ranges that chain the central backbone of the state. Certainly, there is some desert, but it doesn't dominate the state land cover nearly as much as say, Arizona.
Former New Mexican here. I chose New Mexico because of the variety in deserts. You have the high deserts which are found further north in the basins and ranges, the semi-arid deserts located in portions of the eastern part of the state, and the Chihuahuan deserts located further south. Each has flora and fauna that aren't necessarily found in the other desert regions giving quite a bit of variety, actually.
