dubble-- i was just being a d!ck..no explanation needed.
To the OP, I would maybe consider moving to Gary, IN. You'd be the Donald Trump of that city with a 100k salary. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that you'd survive long enough to spend it.
I'm not quite sure how many people say 100k is not enough to live comfortably in NYC. Unless you're supporting a family, it is extremely easy to live comfortably on that salary in NYC. I've lived in both NYC and Chicago, and I moved back to NYC because I like it a little bit better overall and my family is here. For me, NYC was worth living in even though it meant I have a smaller apartment than I did in Chicago.
Chicago offers most of what NYC offers (and offers certain things NYC doesn't offer), but it costs half the price. It is an amazing city and on a 100k salary, one can live a nice life. I've always thought Chicago was the absolute best value in the US in terms of what you get for what you pay. It is one of just a few cities in the US that I could move to from NYC and not feel like I'm settling or trading down.
Pittsburgh is a nice, affordable city and offers more than many pricier cities, but it's very different from what NYC and Chicago offer and is obviously not on par with those cities at all. However, someone in Pittsburgh would have far more money leftover to spend, enjoy the city, travel, save up, etc. than someone in NYC or Chicago so that is something to think about.
I have a co-worker in this very situation.....Her and her hubby want out of NYC it's become too plastic and they want a better quality of life than what NYC is offering.....i.e. Paying a Small fortune for a Closet Apartment, plus they do not want to raise a family in NYC....They want a slower pace of life while keeping all the big city amenities Nothing better than the Burgh for that.
The Fact the husband can keep his NYC job and Salary and telecommute from Pittsburgh is why they're getting OUT!
His NYC salary in The Burgh will be paradise for the both of them, she can even afford to take time off from looking for a job and both live comfortably on the Hubby's income for a while.
100k in Pittsburgh, live downtown in a Condo and live the Sex and City life Shop/Travel/Eat at the finest restaurants at your hearts desire, never having to utter the words "I Cannot Afford That"....100k cannot do that in NYC taxes alone will eat your pay a live. Chicago is better but not by much.....
I'm sure you could live comfortably on $100k in both cities. But I want to own a nice old house with lots of character. I get the impression that, in Chicago, $100k/year would allow me to afford a craftsman bungalow in a sketchy neighborhood; and in Pittsburgh, I could afford a nice Victorian or American Foursquare in a nice neighborhood.
Depends on the neighborhood in which you're lumped in.....Not the best overall but not the worse...The Suburbs and the Inner ring suburbs are much better
Spotty. The magnet schools are excellent. The remainder of the schools overall aren't great, but aren't nearly as bad as the schools in comparably-sized cities. There are lots of good private schools too.
Pittsburgh is cute...but it doesnt belong in the thread with these two other cities. I understand the premise of the thread...but in my opinion its not even close...NYC #1 with Chicago #2 and Pittsburgh a far, far #3.
