I made one for Metropolitan Areas and said I was going to make one for cities. But unfortunately I procrastinated a bit from doing so. A lot of reading and essays to write.

Anyways here it is. And I'd like to request, that I know population can at times be a very emotional/sensitive topic for a lot of people from a particular place that isn't seeing its best year (or years) but can we please agree to be respectful about this? I can say with certainty that population threads tend to take out the best in people, and the worst, and it really flirts with sensitivity. Please don't provoke anyone, please don't bash, and please be respectful of others.

Comments like "Oh look San Antonio is going to surpass Philly!" is provoking, (San Antonio would get smashed in receiving comments after that provoking incident) no one knows what San Antonio is going to surpass so lets leave it at that. This thread isn't to discuss who will surpass what (you can if you want though but the thread isn't about that), this thread is to see how cities fared this decade and to see where they're headed.

Remember city populations are meaningless compared to the larger MSA's, CSA's, & UA's. So please take it as just a report card to see if you're city is either gaining or losing. Because a lot of people are truly curious more than anything to see how their city's population is increasing or declining presently. Please leave all the "bashing" and whatnot aside, if you feel the need to bash send it through a DM to whoever from whatever city you want to aim a bash too.

Here goes. Find your city below and join in on the conversation!

Cool...

LA is approximately 1 million more than Chicago. Chicago basically has not budged only a 1.2% change in 10 years. For all the new development in some areas, just as many are still leaving. Judging from U.S. and other cities growth rate though would have to say Chicago is declining and new jobs are being created in less tax burdened states like TX/NC/GA
Chicago, you do not have the attraction of NYC or SF in terms of lifestyle cities, you are going to have to tune your taxes and model them like a Dallas or Houston for a better business climate or otherwise suffer the consequences

SF is lower than I thought, it was projected to be over 850K.

San Jose is also lower than I thought, it was projected to be over 1M.

For all the talk about Pittsburgh booming, it sure is losing population. Probably similar scenario to Chicago, while creating some new jobs, it can't keep up with the declining industries.

New Orleans looks to be having a boom rush. look at 2006-2010, wow. For as much as Katrina did it is growing steady, probably a lot of people will make money on real estate deals.

Newark actually had its first decade of actual growth since 1950 (2000-2010).

It was only by 2-3%, but that's a start.

It really reflects what people have been saying about each city. Southern boomtowns are rapidly increasing in population while some midwestern and northeastern cities are (while still major economic centers) are decreasing in population. (Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, etc.)

Yeah, Chicago really let themselves go since 1950. But its nice to see it increasing again, after spending the first half of this decade declining after gaining the last decade.

Yeah California has their own census, which displays San Jose above one million and San Francisco at 840,000 or so.

Their version displays the population for their cities as 5% larger than the US Census displays. I just go by the US Census. California isn't the only place getting under counted, so its just fair game for all.

St. Louis has genuinely stabilized this decade and actually added 11,000 residents this decade. Certain sections of the city are still rapidly emptying out, but the revitalization in other parts are so great that we actually netted a gain.

I agree! It's so awesome to see that St. Louis has been adding people almost every year of the past decade. Hit a few minor bumps along the way (2003 & 2009) but it continues to grow. 11,000 people in one decade is pretty good.

Wish I could say the same for my city Memphis. It lost 15,000 in one decade.

Yeah, wow...NYC is headed toward 8.5 million, the most people who have ever lived in an American city. Sooner or later, won't there be a "maximum capacity reached" situation, where no additional people will fit into NYC?
