I suppose because most of the Silicon Valley corporations are in office parks in adjacent suburbs. The "Capital of Silicon Valley" is more of a bedroom community.

Kinda the opposite of San Francisco.

Very interesting stats. I'm more interested in the mid-sized cities. I think they need more love. However, what happens in DC IS FREAKIN AMAZING.

Throwing 2000 stats in here is ridiculous. Atlanta's daytime approaches 875k.

As of 2000, the central city population of Minneapolis - St. Paul jumped to 806,742, an increase of 136,973.

I think there will be a slight increase in the 2010 numbers.

Was the list of Daytime populations for the 2010 census ever released?

NYC isn't that impressive because it's only around a 6% increase or so (even though the raw numbers are large). DC is way more impressive because it's more like a 70% increase. (**Just doing some back-of-the-envelope math here**)

NYC is much more impressive if you look at Manhattan alone (I only have 2000 stats). NYC contains a much percent of the metro's population than DC contains so the NYC numbers mask a lot of long intracity commutes:

New York County, NY (Manhattan) - 1,537,195 - 2,874,003 +1,336,808

87% increase

Almost every other city or suburb county in the metro has a substantial population decrease, with the highest being Staten Island (-16%) and Queens (-15%). An exurban county in New Jersey, Sussex records a -23% change, but its population is small and it's barely in the metro area.

Detroit also shrinks (by -0.1%) but you forgot to include it in your list.
