Los Angeles is the densest UA in the country. It's core is as dense as Chicago's. I would say that your perception is the opposite of what i consider rational.

But much of what he compared it to is also pretty dense. LA is at least a little like North jersey and LI. But not all of it. They both have many more low density areas than LA does.

i've never been to chicago... have you seen long island? pretty dense ; )
It is totally plausible to come to LA or the LA area and only see the medium to low density areas and come away with the impression that the whole area is like that.
LI and NOVA have many more low density areas and less extremely high density areas than LA does.
I'm guessing he spent a lot of time in Jersey and Long Island.
