What is the best (in your opinion) musical artist to have come out of your state?
Not American, but out of WA probably Jebediah or the Sleepy Jackson (I doubt most Americans have heard of them). ACDC and INXS had WA connections, but we can't really claim them.
There are too many great ones from Georgia to pick one...Otis Redding, James Brown, Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Jessye Norman, R.E.M., Outkast, Trisha Yearwood, B-52s, Indigo Girls, etc.
Indiana - Jackson 5, which would include Michael Jackson, of course; John Mellencamp; Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. Axl Rose of GNR and the late Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon hail from Lafayette, IN.
Among many, many others, ZZ Top and the one, the only, the great Stevie Ray Vaughn hail from Houston... not to mention Beyonce, Johnny "I Can See Clearly Now" Nash, Townes Van Zandt and the many old school blues artists, gospel singers and scores upon scores of rappers.
I know Leadbelly's not from Houston, but I figured it's appropriate:
If you ever go to Houston
You know you better walk right
You know you better not stagger
You know you better not fight
In my opinion, the best and most influential musician to come from Texas is Buddy Holly. This is not just because I'm a homer, but he (along with Elvis) basically started rock n' roll. Too bad his career ended prematurely. He's world famous, and he was on the national stage for only two years.

And his cousin Marvin. If Marvin hadn't heard Michael J. Fox play guitar during the "Under the Sea" dance in 1955, Chuck would never have learned "Johnny B. Goode."
