212 is so gangsta.

$1 Million For A 212 Area Code?

Anyway, the story about the 212 number being auctioned off reminded me that Area codes are kinduva big deal in the Bay Area too and that goes back to when we were all 415.
Quote:
It isn't as if 408 was carved out during Old Testament times. The entire Bay Area once shared what is now San Francisco's tony 415 area code. For people in San Jose before that change was made in 1959, 408 always seemed like 415's slightly less cool little brother.

Ma Bell's original area codes are easy to spot by their middle digits, which are 0 or 1, conferring a measure of hipness on the East Bay when it converted to 510 in 1991. For 650, 831 and 925, undoubtedly those area codes have many fine qualities that are known to the people who live there.

Santa Clara County's 408 will spin off a new area code: 669 - San Jose Mercury News
Tongue-in-cheek but still makes a point.

415=Tony, Posh, The City & Marin

650/408=Silicon Valley

510=Hip, Urban(Never really thought of that till I read the article above but I suppose it makes sense)Oakland, Berkeley

We have others but these 4 area codes definitely have an attitude associated with them.

Do your local area codes have similar caches assigned to them by locals? And what about loyalty to them?

Seems unimportant to me but then, I dont think Id ever be able to part with my 510 number-even when I moved to the East Coast I didnt change my number. LOL.

412 is the area code that ticket offices for various NFL teams block whenever the Steelers come to town.

Thank God for StubHub.

Toronto city: 416 is cool, while 647 is newer and considered kinda "wannabe".
Toronto's suburbs are in the 905 and 289 area codes and are considered beyond lame.

With number portability and the ability through some providers to pick and choose your own area code, the bond between an area code and physical geography is starting to loosen. In less than 3 minutes I could have a number with a 415 area code ringing my home phone in Chicago if I wanted to. In fact at one time I had phone numbers with 5 different area codes all programmed to ring my home phone.
