Nice is actually a "third tier" city, if such a tiering exists. Marseilles, Lyon and Bordeaux are all much larger. But I like Nice a lot:

- Wonderful location at the foot of the Alps. Close to Monaco and Liguria.
- Very clean and elegant (hard to define, but it's a Cote d'Azur thing)
- Extraordinary waterfront along the Promenade Des Anglais and Vieux Nice (Old Nice) is beautiful with some great restaurants
- Nice invented ravioli and no one does it better
- Seafood is wonderful
- My view of "safety" in France is much the same as in the US - people should stop being paranoid

I could go on and on, but - suffice to say - I wish I were there right now

BTW: Why did you post this in a US forum?

Safety-Dunno. Never felt in danger in either.

For me, Nice.

Everytime I travel to that area and spend a few weeks there with my in-laws, I dont want to leave.*sighs*

Marseille although most French people outside of Marseille find it less than sophisticated.People in Marxeille are direct and very straightforward.I find it rich in history with a nice urban fabric that has produced distinct subcultures .It being the major port of France gives it a certain character that only port cities of the world can give.Nice I only know a little about except its more tourist oriented. Also a little bit more openminded.
