Industry your city Dominates -
Third-largest art market in the US, after NYC and LA.

-And Activity your City Dominates (Partying, Wall Street, Tourism, Logistics etc)
Tourism

-Sport your City Dominates
Outdoor sports in general (skiing, hiking, mountain biking, road cycling, etc.)

-Unrivaled Area or Street ( Midtown Manhattan, Las Vegas Strip etc)
The Plaza

-Unrivaled Population or Economic Growth
N/A - things are fairly static here.

Las Vegas:

Best (or among the best):
Gambling, Conventions, Nightclubs, Tourism, Living Expenses (no state income tax, very little property tax). Population growth is strong.

Worst:
Pro Sports (Largest US metro without a team)... Also, many people think Vegas isn't a real city (lack of ordinary stuff like parks, libraries, etc) when it isn't true. So I guess I would say we are a bit misunderstood as a city in general.
High unemployment rate as well.

Hartford

Best: Insurance Industry and Suburban Wealth

Worst: Crime (in city proper) and Pro Sports (largest media market in the country without a professional sports franchise)

Hmm, for a mid-major marketplace Jacksonville excels at logistics, insurance, medical, finance, and the Navy.

For things that could arguably be #1...only three possibilities come to mind:
1) Golfing (second-most golf courses in the country and the Hall of Fame and PGA headquarters)
2) Oldest City (that being St Augustine, ~45 min drive from downtown Jax and part of the MSA)
3) Cheapest high-end real estate. (Can you get a luxury condo 2/2 with this view for 250k anywhere else?)

Worst things would easily be:
1) Sprawl
2) Mass Transit

This may be a little off from what you're looking for, but I'll take a stab at it. They may not dominate but they are among the best in each category

Chicago- Great in Pro Hockey, Logistics, Commodities, great waterfront, architecture, second largest downtown, one of the top finance cities, pizza, Italian Beef, one of the best summer cities, great sports fans, great colleges (U of Chicago, Northwestern)

Not so great - managing the city's budget, Baseball(Cubs), crime in some areas of the city, segregation

Twin Cities - one of the best park systems, very educated population, great quality of life, winter sports/activities, juicy(or Jucy) Lucys, managing crime, low unemployment

Not so great - the winter and the winter(had to say it twice for emphasis lol)

Boston:

Best at: Healthcare and Higher Ed.

Activity: Seafaring activities (sailing, commercial fishing, etc.)

Sport: About as dominant as you can be in modern NFL Football.

Unrivaled place: Back Bay, Beacon Hill, North End. Faneuil Hall is fairly unique architecturally and functionally, but it's a bit too touristy and full of chain retail to be truly in a class of its own.

Worst:
Being "laid back."

Boston also over-regulates all things booze related. We should have a happy hour, and last call should be later. Grocery stores should sell booze.

Boston has among the worst NIMBY crowds of any major city making development tough (though it's gotten a lot better).

Not a great city to drive. Not something that bugs me, but it's definitely a problem for many.
