There are so many people focusing on new cities in this thread, when in fact, they're the focus of the country in many regards today (outside CD); and therefore, they're not overrated IMO. I feel like I always hear someone talking about how cheap taxes are, how many jobs, low crime rate, and how nice the weather is in Texas, NC, VA, etc etc etc.
My opinion is that there are many cities with good bones that fly under the radar in what they offer. Here they are:
Pittsburgh
Buffalo
Baltimore
Minneapolis
Milwaukee
Charleston
Kansas City
Many of these cities are much smaller in population, but IMO, many have a bigger city feel than many of the "big" cities elsewhere in the country. For example, I visited Pittsburgh a month ago and I thought it felt waaayyyyyy bigger and more vibrant in downtown than someplace like Charlotte, Austin, etc. Easy to get around, great food, interesting architecture, tons of museums and amenities, walkable, good transit, etc.
Of course, I'm speaking from the city perspective, and not the metro.
I agree... if anything, I think Austin is generally overhyped and overrated.
Here is a published underrated cities list:
Providence
Portland
Baltimore Fort Lauderdale
Houston
Kansas City
Louisville
Minneapolis
Pittsburgh
Sacramento
and another
Chicago
Pittsburgh
New Orleans
Milwaukee
Buffalo
IMO, Fort Lauderdale isn't underrated. Other than Las Olas, what does it have?
The Beach Boardwalk with hundreds of restaurants and hotels, Great Art institute and Museum, A good portion of what Miami has, just cheaper, diverse population, dense urban core, plethora of clubs, proximity to the Hardrock Casino and Resort, GREAT Airport(some say it's almost on par with MIA), Great Science Museum, underrated restaurant scene(the rotating Hyatt Restaurant specifically). South Florida seems like one of the most under-explored metros on this website. It's like people go to South Beach and blind fold themselves to everything else.

Well, that can't be said for me. I went down there in July for 10 days and did things in all three counties. Fort Lauderdale is rated appropriately, IMO. It really is just like the rest of South Florida, which, IMO, is also rated appropriately.
Long Beach. The city makes up half a million people, yet it's underrated.
