This might be a matter of personal taste. But which city do you prefer/think is best for nightlife in the South?
I would say New Orleans, since I prefer older styles of music to electronic/techno/dance. Not a huge hip hop fan either. The party was definitely everywhere in town on the streets, not just inside in clubs, bars etc like other cities.
you might as well should have called this, "which city in the south has the best night life? austin or new orleans?"
i've never been to new orleans... but i doubt austin can hold a candle to new orleans night life. i'd say if you were including miami... it would certainly be new orleans and miami all the way. and then austin. but then again... i dunno, people seem high up on atlanta and even some would suggest houston or dallas.
Nightlife is overrated these days, you pay a ridiculous cover charge at most places and on average a 10 dollar cocktail plus tip. And people standing around thinking that they are somebody, ugh, those good ole days are over when people were "normal".
What makes for a good nightlife? Just about all the cities on the list have lots of bars and clubs. What truly makes one better? I can see New Orleans and Miami because their cultures are more centered around partying. The others have lots of places to go out.

Bingo for Atlanta but N.O. is the polar opposite in every way.
Liveliness to the point of boarderline mass hysteria goes to New Orleans for sure. Nothing else approaches what I've witnessed down there (away from the Quarter). But all things considered, (variety of clubs, bars, genres of music, televised events etc.) Atlanta wins easily IMO.
The nightlife vibe of the two couldn't be any more different though. N.O. is way more 'leave all inhibitions at the door and drop it like it's hot' than ATL will ever be which I can appreciate in doses, while Atlanta is far more 'nose in the air' which becomes equally exhausting after a time.
I haven't completely made up my mind about this, but right now I'm thinking:
1. New Orleans
2. Austin
3. Houston
4. Atlanta
5. Dallas
