New York looks mighty safe from where I'm sittin'.
The 30 shootings is one precinct, with about 180,000 people. The city has had 500 shootings so far this year in 5 months. I doubt any place of similar size has as much shootings as the Brooklyn and Bronx hoods. The 48th precinct only has about 80,000 people and it has had 26 shootings in 5 months.

Our shootings are up about 10% over the past two years....but unfortunately this year the gangbangers must have a lot better aim, cause the murders are up a LOT.
Many of the main gangs have had leadership busted down, and now there are dozens of smaller weaker/leaderless "gangs" and factions that are running wild on each other. Basically stupid teenagers with no structure in their groups who just wander around trying to shoot at other gangs.
7 shootings in one night.
Just like I said.
Most likely 25ish this weekend.
That's not counting the suburbs.
Driving home from work over here in MayWoods I saw a blocked off block with bullet shells, and then heard another shooting elsewhere
We're very isolated when it comes to murders. 66% of murders happen in 20% of the 77 official neighborhoods. Splitting it down more:
The Good
Districts with 16% of the city's population had 1% of the murders (1.6/100,000).
Districts with 33% of the city's population dealt with 5% of the murders (2.5/100,000).
Districts with 50% of the city's population dealt with 11% of the murders (3.6/100,000).
The Bad
Districts with 2% of the city's population dealt with 12% of the murders (70.0/100,000).
Districts with 5% of the city's population dealt with 21% of the murders (66.7/100,000)
Districts with 9% of the city's population dealt with 32% of the murders (55.2/100,000).
Districts with 17% of the city's population dealt with 50% of the murders.
Districts with 32% of the city's population dealt with 75% of the murders (37.9/100,000).
Districts with 40% of the city's population dealt with 84% of the murders.
Done for New York City
Good
Districts with 16% of the city's population had 1.8% of the murders (0.7/100,000)
Districts with 33% of the city's population had 6.4% of the murders (1.2/100,000)
Districts with 49% of the city's population had 13.7% of the murders (1.7/100,000)
The Bad
Districts with 2% of the city's population dealt with 9.4% of the murders (26.4/100,000).
Districts with 5% of the city's population dealt with 17.5% of the murders (21.1/100,000)
Districts with 10% of the city's population dealt with 29% of the murders (17.9/100,000).
Districts with 20% of the city's population dealt with 51% of the murders.
(15.6/100,000)
Districts with 40% of the city's population dealt with 80% of the murders.
(11.7/100,000)
This neglects certain pockets, often housing projects inside districts. For example, the largest housing project in NYC (and now in the country after Chicago tore down its projects), the Queensbridge Houses, recorded a murder rate in the mid 40s per 100,000. But the district it's (Long Island City) in is quite safe (murder rate 2.4 per 100,000). Almost all the murders occurring in that precinct were in the Queensbridge Houses.
NYC housing projects record a murder rate 3 times higher than the city as a whole and there's a large variation within projects.
The closest I could find about specific neighborhoods for Detroit.
Zipcode 48205 had 38 shootings for an area with 44,000 residents from June to August 2011. In total, there were 254 shootings across the city within the same time period.
Relative to the Brooklyn and Bronx statistics, this is extremely violent (based on SuperMario saying 30 shootings for 180,000 people)
The average population among each zip code is between 12,000 and 50,000.
48205 is the most populated with the highest per capita of shootings with 44,000 residents.
48221 is the most populated with the lowest per capita of shootings with close to 39,000 residents.
48228 is the most populous zip code at about 52,000.
48226 (the CBD) has just above 5,000 residents so shootings there greatly increase the per capita number. The zip code next to it (48216) has the same population numbers. They are also the two least populated zip codes.
48243 is just the Ren Cen and is pretty irrelevant among these statistics.

Wow south side Chicago has def got to be one of if not the most dangerous place in america and the world. It's interesting because the south Bronx used to be the most dangerous place in America, but is now one of the safest hoods!
But I still say 27 shootings with a population of 70,000 it's higher than the average. Extrapolate the shootings for the year and you get around 70 shootings. When you divide that by the population, you get 1 shooting for every 1,000 people.
But Chicago is off the charts. So is Detroit. A hood by hood comparison of both places would be interesting.
