Amazingly, the comparatively small big island of Hawaii is the SECOND HIGHEST island in the world, after Papua New Guinea. Mauna Kea rises to a height of 4,205m (13,796 ft). Actually, the island of Hawaii itself is kind of Mauna Kea/Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea is the highest mountain in the WORLD from it's base under the sea, at over 33,000 feet (higher than Everest).
California has it all. The redwoods are particularly amazing!
I live in Oregon, but voted for California, which I think may have more interesting scenery mainly due it's size.
Alaska I'm familiar with, but honestly, I think much of it is redundant scenery. Could be a tie maybe. But I think CA may have it.
Some folks may think Hawaii is cool, but take away it's beaches, and even a single park like Olympic National in WA can almost go toe-to-toe in many regards.
Utah then NM hands down. Cali has some nice spots but for their size Utah and NM have incredible scenry top to bottom. Significant parts of Cali are boring and the same and its miles between some of the great spots so density of scenry in Cali trails Utah and NM. I havent been to the Islands yet but doubt they would appeal more than the ones I have seen... not a big fan of beaches and ocean scenery
It is tough to beat western Colorado. Drive north from Durango to Montrose on US 550 and I think you'll agree.
