California(LA/Hollywood, SF/Silicon Valley, San Diego, Central Valley, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, etc.) and New York(NYC, Upstate NY, Hudson Valley, Niagara Falls, etc.) are easily the two most worldwide known places from the U.S. but i was just wondering, between which of these two would be considered more famous across the globe as i heard from others that CA is more popular in Asia while NY is more in Europe and honestly its hard to pick one but lets see the poll and the discussion. Try not to be bias.

As states and nothing else, California. It is a bit difficult because New York state is named after New York, the city which I would guess is the most popular or well know US city. Maybe a little challenge from Washington for the political or news savvy crowd.

It would be rare if someone knew about California and didn't know about New York if you asked people around the world I assume.

Some people dont know New York is a state. They think it is just a big city.

The winner by a state is California

It's kind of a wash. When I travel abroad and people ask where I am from, they recognize Philadelphia but often aren't exactly sure of how important and large of a city it is or where it is located. When I say I grew up in (Upstate) New York, faces light up. The next place they will ask about or mention is California.

I see why people say what they do about NYC as a city and California as a state, however, foreigners who don't realize New York is a state probably do not know all that much about US geography and politics to begin with, and might be equally uneducated about California.

I think NYC is the first place that comes to mind to most foreigners. Then, a few places in California follow like LA, SF, and maybe Napa/Yosemite, although Niagra also has worldwide recognition.

A better poll might be which COAST is more popular:

West: San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle
East: DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, NYC, Boston

Well California takes more selfies but I'm pretty sure NY is more popular on Instagram.
