How is this even a question? The only thing Baltimore has going for it over Austin is ease of access to other real cities.
why not? find recent polls with baltimore and you'll see them on par with philly and such. here's one of it dominating portland, OR, which many people here much prefer over Austin.
Austin doesn't look any different than any other new city.
Baltimore has a high crime rate but it will take a knowledge of living there to compare.
Baltimore is more advanced when it comes to public transportation.
Economy probably depends on your field. Low unemployment doesn't give you the full picture of the economy. You have to look at wages and diversity and size of the economy.
Austin is a very new city relative to Baltimore. Summers can be extreme (but a much drier heat than Baltimore) and winters are quite mild. One of the safest large cities in the country. Very laid back live-and-let-live culture. Nightlife is excellent, not on par with cities like LA and Miami but significantly better than Baltimore. Geographically, west of downtown is dominated by rugged hills and canyons while east of downtown is flat. Some downsides: it's in Texas, traffic is apparently some of the worst in the country, and lots of trustafarians/hipster types. Real estate is MUCH more expensive in Austin, but cost of living is lower.
Baltimore has a great urban layout and beautiful row houses (fewer every day though...), but it's dangerous, flat, and basically located in a swamp. Chilly winters and hot, extremely humid summers. One upside is that it's close to DC and Philly, and connected to the rest of the Northeast by rail. Baltimore also has much better museums than Austin.
That's because this forum is full of ignorant baltimore apologists who spend all of their time trying to convince people that it's not a total craphole. There are plenty of metrics on which to measure an area's relative success compared to other areas. When you break this down and it's about measurables rather than a few dozen people with too much time on their hands to cheerlead, it becomes obvious which cities are better than others.
Baltimore better than Portland and Austin... now I've heard it all.
Baltimore does lead the nation in per-capita intentionally set commercial structure fires, which I suppose is something to brag about these days.

Proximity to other cities isn't an upside for Baltimore. You're better off just visiting or moving to those cities, and staying away from Baltimore altogether. It isn't like the hotel rates in Baltimore are cheaper than what you would find in other nearby cities except NYC.
