If you are a Bible-believing evangelical Christian you probably aren't going to be too comfortable in San Francisco or the PNW. On the flip-side a flamboyant gay vegan hipster stuck in the South would probably spend quite a bit of time wishing he lived somewhere else.

Are there any cities where these two opposite worldviews co-exist? I know there are liberal minorities in even the most conservative cities and Christians even in San Francisco, but in these heavily lopsided cities there may not have much going on if you are among the opposing worldview. I am wondering about cities with large visible megachurch and Christian culture that also have large visible arts, LGBT, and hipster communities.

My first thoughts are places like Charlotte, Dallas, Tampa Bay, and Houston. What other "purple" cities can you think of?

Generally, I find people co-exist better when they don't reduce their view of society to a set of binary stereotypes.

The major southern cities leap to mind. Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Raleigh, Charlotte, and Nashville.

Most major cities i would expect to have liberals. Dallas has a large amount of liberals even though overall dallas is a moderate political climate. If you are talking about small cities college towns are usually very liberal compared to the general area regardless of what state its in.

Actually, in the PNW, you'd feel quite comfortable IF you don't wear your faith on your sleeve.

A common misconception is that Seattle and west of the Cascades are a bunch of liberal leaning granola eating hippies. Far from it. It's quite moderate in my opinion, and people don't like talking about politics or religion. They feel it is a personal choice and that's that. You'll hear it on talk radio and such but that's about it.

I would characterize the region as a whole as liberal leaning libertarianism.

All the big cities in the south.

Big three Dallas, Houston, Atlanta is the epitome of this.

As well as Austin, New Orleans, Central Florida (north Florida is straight up southern, South Florida is about as Southern as NYC), possibly Memphis, Charlotte is the epitome of this.

But I do agree. This dichotomy is stupid. Its not like either/or. People are not classified into either Bible Belt conservative of sophisticated liberal. There are sophisticated conservatives.

I would rephrase the thread as where can you find people and communities that are a blend of conservative values yet also cosmopolitan and progressive minded. Or at least coexisting.

I would also add Orange County, San Diego too. There are others outside the south as well.
