HOTLANTA! Not only is Atlanta one of the south's most prominent cities and home to Coca-Cola, but Oakland is a spit of what San Francisco and San Jose. Oakland has a population of 200,000 it doesn't Deserve to be a major US city. It just gets whatever it can from nearby San Fran and silicon valley.

-Economy Tie...on their own both are OK. Atlanta still hasn't fully recovered and is a dichotomoy, with those who have college degrees doing ok while those who don't all unemployed still. Construction finally picking back up, which is always a major employment sector in the city, which is dangerous. Oakland's own economy is perpetually "OK", but it can also ride SF's waves which is a plus.
-Diversity No question, Oakland. Hardly any other city in the US is more diverse than Oakland.
-Liberalism No question, Oakland, hardly any other major city in the US is more liberal.
-History Atlanta, no question. Oakland does have more prewar buildings, but Atlanta has a very interesting and unique history.
-Culture Hmmm, I have to give it to Atlanta even though I can't stand the culture there. It is a standout culture. Atlanta also has better museums and cultural venues being that it is the center city of 6 million people whereas Oakland is the underdog to SF.
-Transit Oakland no question. Atlanta transit is miserable, totally inexcusable.
-Walkability Oakland no question here. Atlanta's hardly walkable outside of certain corridors, but most of Oakland is pretty walkable.
- Food Scene Oakland...from concentration of ethnic restaurants to a restaurant scene that is almost playing to SF's level to a degree, Oakland has that undeniably superior CA food scene. Atlanta tries wayyyy too hard and all of the food is similar.
...just curious
I lived in Atlanta 6.5 years and now live in the Bay Area. I give this to Oakland objectively (barely) and subjectively. ITP Atlanta should be compared to SF (where it will go down in flames on all levels) as it is the "city" for a major metro. Oakland is an underdog town that borders SF and plays 4th fiddle in the area (to SF, SV, and SJ) and still comes out on top. Oakland is a pretty cool town, and this is one comparison where I think it would be valid to say Oakland "has SF" as a major bonus point that stomps on Atl, since we are comparing to ITP Atlanta, the central core of a region comparable in size to the Bay Area.
