That is false, except maybe in the south. Was <10% in my hometown.

Uh, there are currently over 300 million Americans, and around 2.5 million back during the nation's founding. I find it hard to believe that most of the 300 million Americans are descended from those 2.5 million folks, especially considering the giant waves of immigration that in single years easily outnumbered the nation's population back in 1776.

You'd surprised low death rate + lots of kids = fast population growth. New England got very little immigration (society was too closed, theocracies are unappealing) until about 1840, and migration stopped around 1660 or so to a trickle.

Hard to find accurate numbers, but it had a population of 60,000 in 1678 and 1.6 million in 1820.

Ok. Fine. I should have written we are: "a nation of immigrant descendants*"

*Except for the south, it seems.

It doesn't sound probable, at all.

Most Americans, prior to the Civil War, were descended from the UK/Ireland, and to a much, much lesser extent, Germany.

The only way your theory would be true would be if most Americans had roots in the UK, and they don't.

Rural America is basically the poorest, least educated, least productive, most subsidized, and most reactionary cohort of American society.

There are certainly positive things about rural life but give me a break. Almost everyone with an education moves to an urban area (not necessarily because they hate rural life but for job opportunities).

In the rural south. In the rural Midwest, a majority were no descended from colonial-era natives. What's wrong with America = descendants of immigrants? It's usually a point of pride. As in our family was living somewhere unpleasant in the Old World, they came here, worked hard, made a better life for themselves here. That's what made America great, but don't forget where you came from!

Yes, in the sense most Americans have both parents who were born here. [Curious about numbers] But it is false that most Americans are descended from the colonial residents at the time of independence.
