I snatch up anything Raphael puts out.

Speaking of which, a little while back I decided to give the Lucy Pearl project some play for the first time in a long time and was blown away now that I have more of an appreciation for pure musicality. That dude's a musical genius.

Same here. The only thing Im not too crazy about is the Ray Ray album though I still have it in my collection. Everything else especially his live album at House of Blues, Instant Vintage and The Way I See It are phenomenal. Stone Rollin' is very good too.

I also think a big aspect of Neo Soul was the concept of "consciousness." Although this concept in music long predates the Neo Soul movement (e.g., Gil Scott-Heron), it seemed to be more of a unifying theme in Neo Soul. That's not to say all Neo Soul was like that, but much of it was.

No worries. I have this argument with friends all the time. Brown Sugar is a dope album (favorite song is "Smooth"). But I just prefer Voodoo's sound. And that's probably because ?uestlove, Premiere, J. Dilla and Raphael Saadiq were all involved in the production of that album. "Feel Like Makin' Love," "The Root" and "Send It On" are just smooth as silk. "Left and Right" has this cool sound to it. Then "Untitled (How Does It Feel?)" is one of the greatest baby making songs of all time. I mean, as good as Brown Sugar was, people will always remember D'Angelo for "How Does It Feel?" That was the go-to song for those nights.

Anything Teddy Riley puts his hands on is gold. "Before I Let You Go" is a classic.

"Beauty" by Dru Hill is also a classic.

I was never a big fan of Joe, but "All The Things Your Man Won't Do" was a hot song.

Never cared for Mya or Tweet.
Agreed with the bold.

Man what the fvck happend to rnb? Remember in the late 90s/early 2000s when Donell Jones, Carl Thomas, Musiq, Avant, Dave Hollister etc. were all hot? Now most of them still release music, (Donell, Carl, Dave do independently) but damn...

Few people appreciate the genius of this song. Marvin lays down two harmonies on the track. One reflects the words coming out of his mouth when he spots a fine, supple woman at a dance. The other reflects his thoughts while he's spitting his game.

"After The Dance" is timeless. I Want You and Here My Dear are Marvin's two most underrated albums.

Philadelphia would have been a cool city to grow up in during the 60s and 70s. I imagine my life being one big continuous scene exactly like this.

Yeah I didn't care too much for the Ray Ray project either. I might give it another listen in the near future though.
