I don't see it as a competition. It's just interesting to talk about the different sounds among cities and also note where musicians are from.
NYC is a city of 8 million people, and it had more black people than the state of California until recently, so it's going to have some bands. It's just a little surprising that the city hasn't really produced a whole lot of soul music. While Luther Vandross and Maxwell are undoubtedly two of the biggest names in the genre, the number of stars produced by the city is underwhelming given its enormous size.
I could say the same about Chicago. However, for me, it's about quality. If the only band that ever came out of NYC was Chic, that would be enough for me. They were definitely one of my favorite bands. They were also one of the best bands, ever. For sure, the same can be said about Luther. He is one name status! R.I.P.!
If the only cats that came out of Chicago were Curtis Mayfield and Chaka Khan, that would be enough for me.
If the only cat that came out of L.A. was Roy Ayers, that would be enough. It's criminal that his music isn't household.
I don't listen to a lot of contemporary music. However, this was in the CD player when I drove my wife's car.
This track sounds like something from the 80s. I hear elements of Chaka Khan. I've got to give it up Jennifer Hudson.
This is undeniable. The Minneapolis Sound ruled the 80s. Don't forgot The Time. It's kind of sad. However, we can thank Prince for firing Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for not showing up for a gig. They went on to help Klymaxx, Janet Jackson, Cheryl Lynn, The S.O.S. Band, Cherrelle, Herb Albert, New Edition and others.
Prince helped Sheena Easton, Sheila E, The Family, Mazarati, Da Crash, more than I can recall.
Mint Condition is still going!
^^Mint is my favorite band ever and I have all their albums and singles. That "music @ the speed of life" album goes hardddd!!! Stokley still sounds like he did in 1991. looks like we like the same type of music. I was just listening to Cherrelle's Affair album this morning on my way to work. lol.
But yeah, Jimmy Jam did a lot and so did Prince. Can't forget about Vanity 6, Sheila E, Sounds of Blackness, Morris day/The Time and host of others that held down MPLS. Hell, Ready for the world own their career to Prince just from the sound of their music.
Weren't the Jets also from Minneapolis?
Going back to NYC, you got Mary J, Mariah, Whitney (just outside, in Jersey), SWV, etc. lots and lots of artists.
I think you could pool together a huge list for NYC, I guess it didn't stand out at first because it doesn't go back that far as the others, or has a major label movement associated with it (such as LaFace for ATL)
I agree, Minneapolis created a new sound, that is equal parts Rock,Punk Rock, Electronic, Funk, R&B/Soul.
