The main issue you'd have with Hyde Park is that it's not really serviced by Chicago's L train system. If you needed to get downtown you'd need to take a Metra train or one of the CTA's buses.

That aside, however, Hyde Park is a nice lakefront neighborhood with quite a bit of parkland. It's also where the Obamas live, so take that as you will.

That's fine... but it is really close to Center City sooo IDK how one could be bored living in UCity. There are plenty of museums and parks, and if you are a college student or in your early 20s there are plenty of college parties and great bars. I've had many a fun nights at MadMex, Cavanugh's, Drinker's, World Cafe Love, the Blockley, Slainte, etc... also a plethora of great restaurants and eats... idk what else you're looking for in an urban environment.

Yea, Center City is great and that's really a big draw. If I went to Penn as a grad student, I'd prefer living somewhere in Center City and commuting to Penn. University City's retard undergrad population is way too high for my tastes.

?Retards? I'm pretty confused. There are a slew of new upscale highrises under construction and already built in UCity that I would have no problem living in as a young professional. I don't understand your hatred towards UCity.

My hatred for it is from spending a lot of time there staying over with friends going to UPenn and being annoyed by the undergrads there. It's a bit like how I dislike being in Westwood in LA due to UCLA or a huge part of Greenwich Village in NYC due to NYU (though Greenwich Village outside a few main streets has that element a lot more diffused than University City). I think having to be around such a huge population of young dumb somethings is annoying. Again, this is my personal preference. Maybe the OP likes being around that. It's okay if you're confused because who cares.

I wouldn't call anyone attending Drexel or UPenn dumb lol.

I definitely would. My friends have to TA for UPenn undergrads. Retarded is putting it lightly--this goes for most undergrads of almost every school I've ever met. It's a phase, I guess.

The MAJOR difference here is that Hyde Park is isolated from the rest of Chicago's happening areas and feels like an island surrounded by rough areas. University City is right next to the core of Philly (although it also borders rough areas as well).

I am confused as well. OyC seems to harbor some sorta unhealthy resentment towards young people. Therapy might help.

Back to the issue at hand, I much prefer UC. Hyde Park is beautiful but as others have mentioned way too isolated. UC is more urban, more bustling and is a stone throw away from all the action in Center City and South Philly.

It's good advice. If you're going to be doing a professional degree at UPenn, I highly recommend living in Center City rather than in University City. Kids in the US come pretty unequipped to undergrad with the ability to not be obnoxious and the US has developed a belief that college is the time when you're supposed to be as obnoxious and inconsiderate as possible. Is it every single college student? Of course not. However, it's in such large concentrations in University City because the combined undergraduate student body of UPenn and Drexel is massive.
