Can we stop with the "insert city would be this amount of density" posts already as its off topic and really nobody cares, as for what the OP asked, I agree city limits are not a good measuring tool as the metro and in a few cases CSA tell the real story, where Houston could tout being the 4th largest city in the U.S. in reality it is 8th if taking in to account the whole area.
DC with one million people would be unrecognizable! Are you sure you meant to include DC in this debate? DC would have a density of 16,393 people per square mile.
