Coming from Philadelphia, I don't find NYC to be THAT hard to park in. You have to take into account that a high percentage of households don't have cars. Plus, the citywide street cleanings 2-4 times per week cuts down on parking space "campers".

But those street cleaning times are a pain, and wildly erratic. Nothing like having to be there by 9:30 one day to move your car, 11:00 the next day...not standardized from street to street at all--and always to have to wait an hour for the "cleaning" to get done. Parking enforcement more than anything tends to camp Guess that's just the nature of the beast...
