I don't see Orlando (not much of a downtown - mostly amusement parks nearby) or Honolulu (most of the city is pretty blah other than Waikiki) as being anywhere close to the top tier. Boston, Nashville, New Orleans, San Diego, Seattle (and maybe Philly) are much more unique.
Nashville much more unique than Honolulu? What's so unique about ****** tonks and the Grand Old Opry unless you're into Honky Tonks and country music?
Houston has 23,000 rooms with the TMC, Montrose, Museum District, Downtown, Uptown, a bit north of I-10... It's getting better but doesn't suggest a touristy city.

Houston is very touristy among one demographic (African Americans) and not among anyone else.

I didn't claim it to be touristy, I simply said Houston's number would double if you included other areas in its core like you did for Dallas.
Was just responding to your comment about Houston being worse. From your updated numbers it doesn't look that way to me.
Yes, I would consider Houston to be more of a travel destination than Dallas. Put Houston on the list and take Dallas off. It's not a travel destination. The JFK stuff is old news, its losing popularity, its not evolving and Anerica has changed. How many people visit Fords Theater?
Yes, same thought. I also would consider Houston to be more of a destination city than Dallas even though they both are in the same league when it comes to "travel destination."
Houston has more defining identity/characters attached to the city itself. Think slab culture, Viet-Cajun cuisine, Art Car culture, and a few other things. I know compared to the other top US metros like Chicago, NOLA, NYC they ain't much. In fact, I'd even argue that all of those things aren't really heard of outside Texas unless you live close to Houston or have been to the city at least once or twice in your lifetime, but at least it's not totally cultureless and does not suffer as much of a lack of identity like Dallas. It's also interesting to note how the presence of NASA is deeply entrenched with the identity of Houston. A good example of it is how all of its sport team names have Rockets and Astros in them. Lastly, Houston is more nationally known as a foodie city compared to Dallas.

Mexican shoppers enter the chat.
Yes...they exist and Houston tends to be one of those places they go to shop.

Wonder what's the number for Dallas once you add in places like Irving or North Dallas corridor area.
But otherwise, when it come to mass market tourism both Houston and Dallas are on the same tier - and a relatively low tier nationally.
Just wondering about hotel rooms count especially around business districts like Las Colinas. Although, yes, counting Irving would also count some of the hotels near DFW Airport.
One of the things I hated about being in LA was constantly running into tourists (especially when I was living on the Westside and Hermosa Beach). One of the things I love about Houston (and Dallas when I was there) is that tourists aren't very present. Definitely run into more of them in Houston but they are almost exclusively African Americans who come here to party and explore that culture. Still not that many overall.
Its much nicer.
