Why do people think current growth patterns will stay the same forever? People back in the day would have looked at you like you were on drugs if you told them Chicago would one day be dropping in population, or that Detroit would be in it's current state, or that backwards Texas would have much higher growth than California. Or that Los Angeles, once the city of dreams, would be sliding backwards. Hell, Houston was a depressed dump for decades after the 80s oil bust and look at it now (even though it's future looks bleak with the current oil slump).

Nothing stays the same. Just 2 years ago, Washington D.C. was outpacing everywhere in all levels of growth and now look at it... negative economic growth.

Lol the nations Capitol will never stop growing, the last two years have just allowed the rest of the country to get back on its feet after DC was out pacing almost everywhere for economic growth. This country does need some balance you know.

DCs growth was due to one factor: increased govt spending for to the war on terror and the recession.

Now that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are winding down and the recession is over, DCs economy is being exposed for the one hit wonder that it really is, hence job growth and economic growth have decreased in the DC metro while everywhere else has increased due to real expansion, not fake expansion due to govt spending.

You're pretty delusional if you think Washington will go back to what it was anytime soon. When we have another major war, maybe, but that's unlikely.

"The Nation's Capital" used to be a run down, drug and homicide mess. You seem to have short momory? Simply being the nations capital really means nothing since the country moved along just fine while the District of Columbia was in shambles for decades. Our elected leaders in D.C. don't give a damn about the actual District of Columbia and fly back to their own districts on the weekends/during recess.

Now, I don't expect DC to revert back to being a dump, but you really should kiss that boomtown thing goodbye (unless Washington DC manages to develop an actual industry that's not govt - which I just don't see happening in our lifetime).

DC leaders and officials already sounding the alarm and scrambling with desperation to diversify their economy and encourage/incentivize commerce but I think that ship sailed long ago.

The DC metro area has become one of the richest, most affluent metros in the country. It will be a long time before the growth stops and the job market weakens to the point where large groups of people stop coming to this area.

Northern Virginia, while the rest of Virginia's growth has slowed down significantly, is the only part of the state that's still growing rapidly and this is after the cuts within the government. Honestly, it will always be an area that attracts the brightest, most educated, driven and ambitious people and anyone who thinks that will change anytime soon is not being realistic.

DC has been growing rapid since the 60's... That's half a century, what the heck are you people talking about??

People see a two year trend and think this spells where a city will be in 40 more. Just like whatever city is growing the fastest this year doesnt mean it will continue at that rate forever either. This is the most illogical stuff I've ever heard.

You know nothing about Washington DC if you're convinced that is the only history of the city. Out of the city's 220 year history you highlight an at most 20 year segment and classify it as what the nations Capitol is (mind you most major cities had the same problems nationwide) I'm through here.
