Awwww dang, a great poster leaving City-Data. There aren't many so this is a pretty huge loss! Have fun and if you're visiting Atlanta on your trip, hope you enjoy the city.
Thank you Ant, I truly appreciate the kind words. I am visiting Atlanta in that 33 day trip and it will be my first time getting to experience the city and I am seriously looking forward to it with friends, so it will be a lot of fun.
Take care and wish you all the best in your pursuits, be it in tech, or another lucrative knowledge-based sector (I know you're well educated - it shows).
Fresno with all due respects is in much worse shape than Detroit, and with the current water crisis taking place in the Central Valley I don't see Fresno being able to support a drastic increase in population. Even though Detroit still needs a lot of work to make it somewhat livable, there is currently a lot of investment taking place in the Downtown and Midtown neighborhoods and a few of the outlying neighborhoods so there are definitely improvements being made.
I think connecting Stockton, Fresno, Bakersfield with SF, Sac, LA, SD via HSR will help immensely. Like Red John said, look at the context that Fresno occupies within California. The ease of access to the rest of the state, the diversity, the COL.
That said, Detroit is the center of a 5 million person region with tons of history. Will Fresno pass it in city limits population? Probably. Still, you can't compare both cities....apples to oranges. I hope both have a bright future.
