Nobody really refers to Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill as "The Research Triangle" either...the simple and shortened "The Triangle" is used by many people regularly though.
It is true that when you are leaving the terminal for the baggage claim area at RDU Intl' Airport you are greeted by a large sign that reads "Welcome to North Carolina's Research Triangle".
i used to use RTP as the reference, not ure how widely it is ued today
RTP= Research Triangle Park....but only for the actual research park itself; not for the metro area as a whole. Same for RDU....that's just the airport, not way to reference the region.
In this case, I'd emphasize Amherst and Northampton over Hartford and Springfield.

There's also Amherst College, Hampshire College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, University of Massachusetts, Central Connecticut University, and Westfield State University.
The first three are just as good, if not better, than Duke.

He was talking about college basketball , are you talking about academics?
Duke is one of the top 10 schools in the country for academics and has been for years. Its med school, nursing school and law school , fuqua business and engineering schools are almost always in the top 10 in the nation in rankings of colleges

I was referring to the college basketball; however your assertion of those schools being more academically prestigious than Duke....probably even UNC....is even more ridiculous.

In terms of academics, it's an apples to oranges comparison. Amherst College, with an endowment of 2.1 billion, is the richest and one of the most selective liberal arts colleges in the country. It's extremely prestigious and popular among the New England old money crowd.
But, with only 1700 students and no graduate programs, it's not exactly known of research.
My guess would be that, as of now, the Triangle has more than 2.1 million: probably fueled by all the people who have moved there from the Knowledge Corridor.
