Indeed, one of the greatest untold stories of the Civil War is that there were a LOT of very poor white "dirt farmers" who were no better off (and in some cases worse off) than African-Americans who went off and fought and died to preserve SLAVERY .... to preserve the vast wealth owned by just a small percentage of the white people.
I dare say, to this day it's likely the decedents of these "poor white cracker" families who are most vocal about "fergit hell" and defending the Confederacy, etc. They still don't understand that they were USED to fight a cause that promised them nothing but generations of poverty and lower-class status.
English feudal system = Southern plantation system
Of course, in the era of Jim Crowe and segregation, politics completely muddled the whole issue and turned many whites who otherwise knew better against blacks as a defense mechanism. But that's a topic for another thread.

Truthfully, Texas and California have them both beat these days.
NY is rotting away and in the south, Georgia has been surpassed by both Florida and Texas.
California is poised to be the new Empire state of the nation. NYC is still tops in density, history and age; but Los Angeles is able to compete in many other ways. Culture, food, music, media, immigration, economy, importance, pious better than you attitudes, etc.

New York City is the media, financial, corporate and cultural capital of the entire world. New York City is in New York State. New York State will ALWAYS be the nation's "Empire State." Just because Texas and California are bigger and have more people does not change that, and never will.

I agree and as I mentioned before, NY State was so far ahead for years due to not only NYC and a strong manufacturing base in Upstate NY, but NYC's location and the Erie Canal opened things up as well. People have to realize that manufacturing employment peaked in 1979. So, places that were more dependant lost its share of industry and have to revitalize themselves in other ways.

Agreed 100%. On the emboldened part, I found it very interesting that when I worked in north Georgia, I saw more than my fair share of Confederate flags displayed in various forms. Appalachia was the most resistant to join the Confederacy because slavery wasn't as prevalent there; those were the dirt-poor farmers that you spoke of.

Well then the Empire is looking a lot more like late Rome these days.
You have to understand too that there's a pretty massive disconnect between NYC and upstate. Upstate in many areas no longer reflects the same level of prosperity that NYC and downstate harbor.

To be honest, I don't know if it ever did, given that Upstate NY has never been known for being an expensive part of the state.

NY - NYC
Cali - LA, San Fran, San Diego, San Jose.
Texas - Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin.
Doesn't seem like an Empire State in 2016. NYC nor New York State isn't desired as it used to be decades ago, those days are gone.
