I've traveled a lot, hiked and biked in 27 states and spent a lot of time doing research on where to go, when to go and what's available. There's a lot of online databases with trail systems mapped out, segments of roads/trails that offer the biggest climbs, and topography maps. So it takes about 10 minutes to see what kind of elevation change an area has.

There's a mountain range southwest of Atlanta (Pine Mountain) that rises quite prominently above the surrounding countryside. And the western suburbs out I-20 going toward Alabama are quite hilly. In fact, one of the best views of the Atlanta skyline is coming over Six Flags Hill on I-20 right at the Cobb-Douglas County line.

The highest mountains in Alabama (the tail end of the Appalachian range) are along I-20 just across the state line from Georgia, about 50 miles from downtown Atlanta. In fact, the highest peak in Alabama (Mount Cheaha) is SOUTH of I-20 just over the state line from Carroll County, Ga.

Nashville and Atl are surrounded by hills . Austin hilly on the west side. And Charlotte has a mountain nearby.

Overall I'd choose Nashville the scenery is close to town
