OK guys so I am a single 21 year old male and I have been living on the west coast all my life (SoCAL) and hate the laid back, chilled, flaky, and superficial vibe that how 95% of people are over here. ( not to be extreme ) Since my father and family has roots in New York, I love the old money, authentic and direct attitude you get from people that are from there. I am going to break down some things I love and would hate about a new city move (in pros and cons): NOTE: SF is by far, one of my favorite cities, but due to its superficial vibe and not so great night life, i had to leave it out :/

PROS (Things I'll LOVE my NEW city to have):

Access to the Amish/Farmland for a short stay and/or visit

Big city with a small city vibe and not too overcrowded like LA

A city that is walkable and/or public transit accessible to which I won't need a car and I can find everything within 2-5 miles ( gym, organic food store, business and real estate opportunities, education, book stores, nature, etc.)

A city with little freeway and street traffic

A city with great and amazing food, culture/arts/music/etc

A city with hiking trails, nature, mountains and peaks to visit and see

A City with AN ABUNDANT Nightlife that has bars close late at night and have everyone social and authentic kind of vibe to which the women are attractive and open about their personality

Affordability to which anyone can live near or in downtown or a popular area for a relative cost compared to any other cities

A great quality of life with artificial, authentic, though can be anal and socially diverse people around

CONS (Things I DONT WANT in a city)

Superficial and flakiness of the majority of people

Overly populated and spread out area

Traffic that makes you hate life

A city that is NOT Culturally diverse and doesn't have a fantastic nightlife

A dirty, environmentally unconscious city that leaves trash laying around with high pollution and streets that stink up the city

High Crime and murder rate, "ghetto" if you will

A city without major cool cities nearby is a no no, (Milwaukee Detroit, Cleveland can be cool, though i never visited)

Please provide absolutely great feedback and explanation if you've been to any of these 5 cities above and why I should live there, I am literally stressing myself out over here and can't choose because I have never been to any of the cities but know one of them fit a ENTP and Gemini type person like me! Thanks

If you dislike SF's nightlife you'll hate Bostons. Boston does not have much of a nightlife scene (though it may improve somewhat with the new casino in Everett).

Boston has traffic although it's not any different then other american cities of its size.

Boston is definitely walkable. The public transit is good by American standards.

If you're looking for a smaller city vibe in a big city Boston is great.

Downtown Boston is not affordable. It's the third most expensive area in the country (after NYC and SF).

If I had to pick one city with your criteria it would be Philly.

Thanks for the feedback!

How long have you lived in the New England area? Why would Philly be great from my criteria? (Keep in mind, I've never visited these cities and know nothing about them)

I'll put it this way.

Welcome to Philadelphia.

The pros described Philadelphia almost exactly right down to the very, very specific request of Amish farmland, though freeway and street traffic isn't exactly little. It even has at least one of the other cities you're interested in nearby (NYC), but there are plenty others like a bunch of mountain towns, seaside towns (like Cape May), the nation's capital (DC), and swing city (Pittsburgh).

Philadelphia does hit the con of having parts of its being rundown as well as having litter about, but that's not all parts.

What an odd list of pros and cons...anyway, none of your choices matches up to what you say you want but Philly comes the closest...I guess Chicago and Boston could battle it out for your number 2 spot...not sure how any of these have a small city vibe (why is NYC on the list?) but Philly does have a nice neighborhood type feeling depending on where you go...access to Amish pretty much seals it for Philly and there is probably less of a pretentious population in total numbers compared to the other cities on your list (not saying those other cities are pretentious overall)

The main contradiction is the desire for a world class city type atmosphere and amenities while having little traffic and not overcrowded. It's tough for me to imagine.

I'll suggest Chicago or Philly. Chicago has Elkhart, IN nearby for Amish country as well so it's not just PA.

Trying to venture a little farther out I think maybe Charlotte could be of interest going down a notch, fewer amenities but also less traffic and crowding.

Philly matches the requirements very well. Definitely your best option among those listed.

You want affordability to downtown and low traffic, yet list the biggest cities in the country?...

That said, Philadelphia.

Another option would be Providence RI. Honestly the nightlife is the same if not better then Boston, it has easier access to NYC, is cheaper, has great food, and has less traffic then any of the cities you mentioned.
