I used to live in Raleigh, NC and am thinking about moving to Charlottesville, VA. There were so many bugs in Raleigh that it caused us to leave. My wife could not tolerate all the spiders, fire ant mounds, mice in the crawl space, bats in the attic, roaches on the window screens, snake holes all over the ground, no see-ums, lizards, etc. Our home was immaculate, we got sprayed for bugs every month inside and out and by a few different exterminators. We lived in a well manicured, upscale subdivision but it did not stop the bugs and critters from coming. I need to know from someone thats lived in both places or is at least really familiar with both- are there as many bugs in C-ville as Raleigh? Is the weather that much different or pretty much the same?

Thanks!

Not that different. Go out west if you want to deal with less creepy crawlers.

We have visited out West. The dry landscape is not something we like.

Do you dislike it more than bugs and critters?

Well, there lies the conundrum. "Stuff" thrives where it rains and is green.

Not in the PNW. I've lived in the Seattle area almost 25 years. My first year living in the south, I've been bitten way more than the 25 years in the PNW. We are looking to move out because one of my kids gets eaten up regularly come summertime. We're also looking to where ideally there's less bugs.

Charlottesville, VA will be very buggy, but can't be worse than Raleigh. We get a lot of critters here in Central Kentucky, many spiders and ants and some of the biggest bee's I have ever seen. Currently, we are being bombarded by these orange large bugs that I am unsure what they are, but they fly right into you when outside and are quite gross, but that is one fact of living in the South. I imagine Charlottesville, VA would be similar.

If you can choose cities and want to stay in the east where lack of rainfall generally isn't a concern, the Asheville area could be a good option. Elevation minimizes many of the pests and while not as high up in town (2100 feet) there are areas on the outskirts of Asheville that sit around the 3000 feet mark which helps considerably.

I live in western Washington (known for being green and rainy) now and there are hardly any bugs here compared to any of the places I've lived on the east coast(NY, CT, NJ, NC, SC, FL). I love it as it makes being outdoors so much more enjoyable.
