Some of those Seattle photos were from early in the current boom and are more impressive today. That said, greater Downtown Seattle has plenty of gaps in urbanity still. Boston is well ahead in that regard.
I disagree about the "all at once" point except in some localized places. Seattle has had boom after boom. The 70s, the early 80s, the late 80s, the late 90s, the late 00s, and now the entire current decade have all made a notable difference. However these periods shared some major traits in architecture and land use code.
