The flaw with MDAllstar's post is the OP said the numbers include city plus surrounding areas. MDAllstar uses city limits but does not account for the areas that are included outside of each city. So, cities like DC and San Francisco with smaller city limits will show more bars per square mile.
So, cities with large land areas like Phoenix and Houston, would also include their 'surrounding areas' as well, right? . . . Even making their already large land areas even more massive.

You can see exactly what area is being included in the Yelp search via the map on the right of the screen. If you type in the name of a city it usually includes some areas outside the city limits, just because city boundaries don't fit neatly into a square map area.

Sorry - I meant to reply to Mr. Ambitious’ comment, not yours.
I misinterpreted the original post. I thought it showed the same radius for each city, but when I did the search myself it seems like the results do closely resemble each cities' limits. I stand corrected.
It doesn't sound like you specified the time. Also, again, this methodology really doesn't work for that granular of a geography.
I did specify the time.
