Both are college towns that have their States flagship University. Both are in geographically interesting areas, Fayetteville being in the Ozarks and Eugene being in the Willamette Valley. Which would you choose as a college town?

Most interested in comparing:
The Universities
The economy
Amenities
Outdoor recreation
Downtowns
Social climate

Especially interested in the opinions of people that have spent time in both places but welcome the perspectives of everyone.

I'd choose Fayetteville. It ranks high on my rankings for small metros AND retirement areas. The area is really growing nicely right now. I like the climate/weather much better in Fayetteville compared to the PNW. It's unique in that it's a retirement area and D-1 college town. My wife and I are in our mid 50's, so that's appealing. The cost of living is low as well.

Just addressing the economic aspect, Fayetteville and Eugene are very different. The Fayetteville metro contains headquarters for Wal-Mart, JB Hunt (trucking) and Tyson Foods (poultry), which is an unusual concentration for a population center of its size. Many other consumer businesses that interface with Wal-Mart also have a presence in northwest Arkansas. The area has reliably low unemployment, and new residential and retail development is proliferating rapidly.

I'm not aware of any significant corporate presence around Eugene, which tends to have a significant under-employment problem combined with a high cost of living. The area has amazing assets in terms of outdoor recreation and the availability of fresh organic produce, however.

As mentioned by the OP, both Eugene and Fayetteville are home to major State Universities. That alone would be enough for a comparison. But there is more...

Both have very similar metro populations! Who would have thunk?

Both areas also also growing at almost exactly the same clip!

So this gets my vote for one of the best city vs city comparisons of all time. Seriously.

Fayetteville is one of the nicest metros in the south. It's like an oasis in the redneck desert.
Eugene is like a bigger Medford. I rather be somewhere else in Oregon.
Gotta go with the AR city here.

I live in the Ozarks. Spend way too much time in NWA.
Never been to Eugene.
I'll take Eugene sight unseen.
