I know Minneapolis, St. Louis and Atlanta have fantastic art museums and live theater that is well attended.
Cleveland has a great symphony they say.
The City museum and National Blues History museum are great as well in St Louis. Nashville will be opening the National Museum of African American Music soon. Memphis has a phenomenal Civil Rights Museum.
Just a few off the top of my head. You don't have to live in a big city to enjoy culture.
DC, Boston and Philadelphia are already long established centers of the arts-it's almost a travesty that they are included in the poll at all. Any city with large numbers of multigenerational wealth, altruistic new money and old money/socialites, is going to have arts patrons to support those kinds of institutions.

Great thread idea. I couldn’t tell you what cities should be on top. I’m just sad that you thought to include places like Albuquerque, Des Moines, and Omaha, but excluded Grand Rapids. For the last 40 years GR has been home to the three wealthiest families in Michigan. The output of which is a very well funded, symphony, opera company, the only civic ballet in the state, an art museum that cost $150million to build 14 years ago, and a botanical garden that has recently become the most visited cultural attraction in Michigan. I certainly don’t think it would or should win a poll like this, but if you thought to include metros that are smaller, at what threshold would you decide GR was worthy to be included in the discussion as well? End whiney homer rant.
I voted for Philadelphia because I lived there, experienced the orchestra and art museum which are justly considered among the best in the country if not the world, etc. But as somebody said above, Philly doesn't really belong on this list. It's not an up-and-coming city, it up-and-came (so to speak) a long, long time ago. It's been an American cultural hub as long as we've had cultural hubs.
The same can be said of Boston. Cleveland, though a younger city, has long had 1st-rate cultural institutions.

Cleveland has long punched above its weight-class in all of these cultural areas.
Albuquerque has the New Mexico Philharmonic Orchestra, Albuquerque Little Theater, Musical Theatre Southwest, Opera Southwest, National Institute of Flamenco, National Hispanic Cultural Center, Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, performance venues that feature traveling shows and musicals like Popejoy Hall and the KiMo Theater, various expiremental theater groups and performance spaces with unique shows such as the Tricklock Theater and Vortex Theater, the Guild Cinema indie theater, Albuquerque Museum of Art & History, UNM Art Museum, Tamarind Institute of Lithography, innumerable art galleries ranging from edgy and underground to traditional Indian and Western art. Albuquerque also has a noted and celebrated botanical garden that is part of the Albuquerque BioPark, which also is the most visited attraction in its state.
