Looks like Texas is back to being Texas, California is still an absolute monster, and both Washington & Massachusetts have surprisingly surpassed North Carolina in economic output.
This is strange. Normally Georgia and NC and like neck in neck in just about everything. I wonder what's up. Maybe just a number glitch
I’m not sure what it is, but North Carolina is extremely healthy economically. It doesn’t make any sense that not one, but two states could catch and pass it so quickly. I had to reread the list 4 or 5 times to make sure I was seeing correctly.
I looked at the PDF and each quarter swings pretty wildly from one another. For example, New York in 2018 was +0.5% in Q1, then +4.7% in Q2, then +3% in Q3, then +0.2% in Q4.
Looking at some of the other states, it looks like Q1 isn't really an indicator. New Hampshire in Q1 in 2018 had +6.4% but then Q2 was -0.7%. They ended up finishing the year 29th highest even though they were tied for 2nd highest in Q1 in 2018.
West Virginia coming in first is certainly unusual. It looks like energy producing states saw the highest growth rates for this time period. This could be a little different in upcoming quarters, especially with commodity prices declining recently.

The states, ranked by economy, pretty much follow the ten most populated states. In order, by population, they are:
California
Texas
Florida
New York
Pennsylvania
Illinois
Ohio
Georgia
North Carolina
Michigan
So, New York's economy is one higher than its population, Illinois is one higher, Pennsylvania, one lower, Georgia, one lower than its population, and Michigan is lower, while Washington is higher. I guess people can read this for themselves, though. All in all, the highest economy states, are the highest in population.
9.) Georgia $608,058
10.) Washington $584,034
11). Massachusetts 581,718
12.) North Carolina 580,187
These states are going to be VERY exciting to watch in the upcomming years.
