To the person who asked why Philly was seeded 2d in the NE/Mid-Atlantic region while Washington was seeded 3d: The OP said that the cities were ranked by MSA population. ISTR the Philadelphia MSA is still more populous than the Washington MSA (which does not include the Baltimore MSA).

I do note that some smaller MSAs were lumped together in a bracket in order to get 16 metros in each.

Now for my votes, annotated where I feel like it:

The Northeast-Mid Atlantic Bracket (Northeast + "Mid Atlantic" Which is DC, DE, MD, VA and WV):
1: New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA vs 16: Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA-NJ/Syracuse, NY — Perhaps the biggest no-brainer of all the pairings.

8: Providence-Warwick, RI-MA vs 9: Richmond, VA — This one's real close, for both cities are comparable in color and amenities. But Providence has Narragansett Bay and Newport right next to it.

5: Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD vs 12: Rochester, NY — Both cities that the years haven't been kind to, but Baltimore hasn't fallen as far as Rochester has, and it has a livelier city core.

4: Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH vs 13: Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, CT — Another no-brainer, IMO; of the three Connecticut cities, two of them are basket cases or nearly so.

6: Pittsburgh, PA vs 11: Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Niagara Falls, NY — But Buffalo appears to be on the rebound.

3: Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV vs 14: Worcester, MA-CT — I just wish Washington didn't have so many Official Washingtonians in it. That crowd keeps the city from being even cooler than it is.

7: Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC vs 10: Hartford-East Hartford-Middletown, CT Both Hartford and New Haven deserve better than they get.

2: Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD vs 15: Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY/New Haven-Milford, CT — Despite what I said about New Haven above, and even though the New York State Capital Region is actually quite nice, they simply don't have the firepower and appeal of Greater Philadelphia.

The Midwest Bracket:
1: Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI vs 16: Toledo, OH/Des Moines-West Des Moines, IA — It's a shame Des Moines had to be paired with Toledo.

8: Columbus, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area vs 9: Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson, IN — More going on and more cool neighborhoods in Columbus.

5: Cincinnati, OH-KY-IN vs 12: Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE-IA — A lot of the things that make Kansas City such a nice place to live can also be found in its little brother upriver.

4: St. Louis, MO-IL vs 13: Dayton, OH — St. Louis gets a bum rap these days.

6: Cleveland-Elyria, OH vs 11: Grand Rapids-Wyoming, MI

3: Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI vs 14: Akron, OH — "Love is all around, no need to waste it / You can have the town, why don't you take it / You're gonna make it after all!"

7: Kansas City, MO-KS vs 10: Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, WI — Maybe the most evenly matched pair of cities in this tournament. But how could I not vote for my beloved forever hometown?

2: Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI vs 15: Wichita, KS/Madison, WI — "Face it. You're in Wichita." —billboard for the now-defunct Wichita CityPaper in the early 2000s. Madison does the heavy lifting in this pair. But I'd be willing to revisit this vote in another 10 years.

The South Bracket:
1: Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX vs 16: Birmingham-Hoover, AL/Tulsa, OK — I've never been to Tulsa but hear it's actually pretty nice, but again Greenwood.

8: Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, FL vs 9: Austin-Round Rock, TX — Generally speaking, I'd take any metro outside Florida over any metro within it, but I do make exceptions.

5: Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL vs 12: Memphis, TN-MS-AR — This is one of them.

4: Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA vs 13: Oklahoma City, OK — Again, more going on in Atlanta.

6: Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC vs 11: Jacksonville, FL — Again, see above, though Jacksonville should be better than it is.

3: Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL vs 14: Louisville/Jefferson County, KY-IN — Had Miami been put up against any other South region metro save Atlanta, I'd probably have voted for it. But Louisville has two things Miami doesn't: Good barbecue and lots of great Bourbon.

7: San Antonio-New Braunfels, TX vs 10: Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin, TN — Maybe Nashville is overrated, and the Paseo del Rio in San Antonio is like nothing else in the country (not even the Country Club Plaza). But I think the whole package is still better in Nashville.

2: Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, TX vs 15: New Orleans-Metairie, LA/Raleigh, NC/ — Largely a sentimental vote for New Orleans. While I'd like to see less emphasis on freeways there, I really like Houston.

The West Bracket:
1: Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA vs 16: Bakersfield, CA/Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, CA — Of course, Ventura could be considered part of LA's hinterlands.

8: Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA vs 9: Sacramento–Roseville–Arden-Arcade, CA — I may be selling Sacramento short here.

5: Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA vs 12: Salt Lake City, UT — After visiting Seattle and San Francisco for the first time in 2006, I told my friends that if I were told I had to choose between spending the rest of my life in San Francisco and spending it in Seattle, I'd choose Seattle.

4: Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ vs 13: Tucson, AZ — But truth to tell, I don't care much for either.

6: San Diego-Carlsbad, CA vs 11: San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA — I always refer to it as "disgustingly sunny San Diego," but I think I'd enjoy living there a little more than I would living in Silicon Valley.

3: Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA vs 14: Urban Honolulu, HI — Again, San Bernardino is part of LA's hinterlands.

7: Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO vs 10: Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, NV — Gambling holds no attraction for me.

2: San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA vs 15: Fresno, CA/Albuquerque, NM[/quote] — Again, it's a shame ABQ had to be paired with Fresno. But even if it weren't, San Francisco is clearly superior on just about every count except availability of spicy Southwestern cuisine.

I'm glad you noticed that! It is a nod to the First Four round, the play in games to get to the famous Round of 64

No it’s not. DC has 6.2m to Philly’s 6m. DC should be a higher seed than Philly based on population, unless OP is choosing seeds based on preference.

The OP is a Philly poster so obviously that's the case. DC is the sixth largest MSA, and 5th largest GDP. Philly is the 8th largest MSA, and 8th largest GDP. So there would need to be legitimate other reasoning beyond those metrics for Philadelphia to be a higher seed than Washington MSA.

Shocked by the number of votes for Richmond over PVD. Is Richmond really that cool?

1: New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA vs 16: Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, PA-NJ/Syracuse, NY

Syracuse is much more desirable than Allentown to me, that was pretty easy. I'll be honest, I love The Cuse and I was tempted to pull the upset on NY, but NY has Queens and along with every other advantage it has, I couldn't bring myself to do it....NYC

8: Providence-Warwick, RI-MA vs 9: Richmond, VA
Richmond, and I really enjoy Pvd but this wasn't too difficult...

5: Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, MD vs 12: Rochester, NY
I'm taking Roc in the upset, Bmore really isn't a very appealing place to me. This is gonna be a minority opinion, but Roc is a much more beautiful city in a much more beautiful natural location. I also prefer the vibe there to Bmore...

4: Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH vs 13: Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, CT
Boston

6: Pittsburgh, PA vs 11: Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Niagara Falls, NY
Gotdamn this is tough, I love them both. ****. I think I'd prefer to live in Buff, but the opportunity cost is probably greater in Pittsburgh....Pgh
