While the name of Hartford doesn't come up nearly as often as the other cities you mentioned, how exactly do you mean "stacks up"? As far as economy, crime, things to do, restaurants or just in general?
IMO, Hartford kinda ranks as one of those cities people simply often overlook, like Louisville KY or Minneapolis. They're big cities with plenty of amenities, but for whatever reason people don't seem talk a great deal about them. I'll end my rant there as I've never been to Hartford.

Yeah I noticed any comparison involving Minneapolis doesn't get much attention. The thread quickly is forgotten. I guess not many people know much about it.

I was just wondering how my area stacks up to cities like NYC, Chicago, Pittsburg, Denver, Seattle, Portland and the top cities in the U.S
Its kind of hard to compare a smallish/mid sized area to the large urban metros you mentioned. Your area lacks alot (but not all) of the museums, theater, restaurants and big pro sports that the larger metros have. On the other hand Hartford have the advantage of being BETWEEN 2 major urban areas plus it is certainly easier to get out into the open country if you want, like Litchfield County.

I just moved to CT a couple of years ago. I don't think Hartford is crappy at all! It has universities, a BIG corporate environment (it is well known for being the insurance company capital), good restaurants, good areas that are safe, bad areas with some crime, racial and economic diversity, very very wealthy suburbs with top education, and blue collar suburbs with great public schools. It is more affordable than the rest of CT and is doing well in this economy. Lots going on in Hartford, and a great nightlife to top it off.
Oh yeah, and you are on the fringes of two major metro areas (NYC and Boston). Just southwest of Hartford begins metro NYC, just northeast of Hartford begins Metro Boston. Metro Hartford combines the two! I have always thought that was kinda cool (hey, I grew up in small town OH).
When I compare it to Cleveland, Hartford is a much, much better place!
