^ Beautiful, the mansion style and the palm trees around it remind me of something you can see in Florida. Obviously without it being on a huge mountain though lol.

Good quality photos from a phone camera! I'm trying to figure out exactly where that mansion is. Could it be Solana Beach or Del Mar? It doesn't look like La Jolla to me.

I started thinking about Del Mar and got to wondering if Dallas has a horse racetrack? Horse racing is pretty popular in California and the Del Mar track is one of the finest in the state. Does Texas allow betting or casinos?

Here's San Diego's horse racing track on the beach in Del Mar.

It's in La Jolla right by UCSD, that's how I know it. We used to go smoke at that spot all the time in college as it was walking distance from the dorms.

Bing Maps

Check out the birds eye view, that place is fricken insane, it's not even the most expensive home in the county either.

Let me just interject something that might quell the Texas vs. California wars:

As a person who loves the coast/beach…the beautiful pics of San Diego (above) got me thinking…

I never thought much about the Texas coast until a few years ago. In the USA when people think of coastal/beach states maybe they think of Florida, California, New Jersey, Louisiana, Oregon, Maine, South Carolina…etc, but for some reason they don’t think of Texas. Having moved from the West Coast to the Atlantic Coast…I got a chance to finally see the real Gulf Coast (beyond Florida) and was a bit shocked at the Texas coast; it wasn’t what I expected. First the climate in winter is very mild. Winters in places like Corpus Christi, Galveston, and South Padre Island… while not as warm as Florida, are only a few degree difference from coastal cities in California like Long Beach and San Diego. I had a chance to explore the Texas coast in November (weather was perfect – sunny, low 80’s, surf temp 82 F)…and coastal areas are filled with newer resort hotels, new home developments, white sand beaches, fun and funky sights, friendly folks, and a laid back Mexican vibe the further south you got toward South Padre Island.

So in fairness to our countrymen in Texas…maybe Texas doesn’t have high mountains…or the elevations along the coast that places like California, Maine, …etc do, but Texas does have a big, long, beautiful coast:

The beautiful Hotel Galveston:

The historic homes in Galveston, Texas (think New Orleans, Charleston, Key West, Newport). They respect the old in Galveston:

...and the new on Galveston Island:

Corpus Christi:

Heading out to South Padre Island, Texas (this is where the fun really starts):

The big Texas Coast:

From the balcony of the hotel on South Padre Island:

Padre Island National Seashore (140-miles of windswept subtropical beach between Corpus Christi and South Padre Island). Just you and the lizards;

There is a coast in Texas!

^ Nice pics, and it's true, when somebody mentions the beach I barely ever think of Texas.

Thanks Trade Wind, those are nice photos of the Texas shore; some remind of California or Florida. This discussion might be better if we broadened to include San Diego vs Houston of the California coast vs Texas coast. But those topics have probably been already done, right?

yeah, but the difference is san diego actually sits on the coast. and while houston isn't really landlocked, it's quite a drive to the bay

Dallas vs San Diego:
I live an hour from Dallas, and I'm going to move to San Diego. Dallas has too much random violence, something San Diego seems to have very little of.

That said, Dallas is a FUN city! I really hope the night life in San Diego is comparable, like has been said before. I'd be really bummed out if SD doesn't have a good rave scene -can anyone share any knowledge on this?
