I think the general idea is NYC. Is this correct?

I lived in Boston's back bay on Newbury st for years. I now live in the upper east side of manhattan. There is no QUESTION NYC is WAAAAY more money. Boston is also pricey, but overall cost of living is higher in NYC.

NYC is not just Manhattan. The other boroughs are less expensive.

Yes, but if you compared comparable neighborhoods, New York would be more expensive.

Manhattan is much more expensive than anything Boston has to offer. However, as TANaples said, there's much more to NYC than Manhattan. Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx all have areas which are quite affordable.

Boston is very expensive compared to most American cities. The North End, South End, Downtown, Beacon Hill, Back Bay and West End are all very pricey. When getting a sandwich at a deli next to Beacon Hill the other day, I noticed an ad for a small 2BR apartment on Beacon Hill listed for $4,500 a month. You won't find that price in too many other cities.

In all honesty, I'm not too sure...I've heard places like Williamsburg are "hip" areas, but I'm not sure what the costs are to live there. I've been told it's not too bad.

My friend's fiance is from Middle Village Queens and I've heard that it's a pretty affordable area too.

Williamsburg prices rival manhattan. It's only one stop on the L train into brooklyn from 14th st, making it an easy commute. Trust me, overall, NYC is way more money. Not just in rents, in food, transport, entertainment, EVERYTHING. Boston is in the top 5, but NY is number 1.

Taxes are a lot higher in NYC too. I looked into a transfer a few years ago, and I would have lost an additional 9% of my paycheck due to the higher state and city taxes.

Needless to say, I passed on the transfer.
