Miami was founded by Julia Tuttle a widow from Cleveland who owned 600 acres on the mouth of the Miami River and by Henry Flagler who was one of the founders of Standard Oil in the 1800's and was from Hyde Park, New York...hence a Yankee!

Tomorrow on July 28th. will be Miami's 122nd. birthday and it was a city built by Northerners since day one.

Miami had Yankees and Jews and Bahamians before the "Southerners" came in.

I honestly can't remember meeting a single person of Bahamian descent in Miami. I'll give you Jews. Not sure why Jews are automatically "unsouthern" unless said jews are from the north. One of my high school teachers had a Hebrew surname and a thick southern accent, and he's a Miami native. I dunno if he's Jewish or not, but his surname is SUPER Hebrew.

This might turn racial like the Chicago and Philly thread but the black folks in Miami def feel more southern than black people in DC!

Other than that this is a good debate cause Miami has lots of immigrants and DC has lots of transplants outside its black population!

Badger? really? The Bahamians worked on Flagler's railroad hence the "black Grove" and those shotgun shacks right off of US 1 he built for them.
You never attended a "Goombay festival" in the Grove? It is a yearly festival.

Bahamians know how to party !

As for the Jews they were from New York / northeast and vacationed as well as populated Miami Beach in the 1910's & 1920's.

Miami had Yankees and Jews and Bahamians before the "Southerners" came in.
"In the 1830s, Richard Fitzpatrick bought land on the Miami River from the Bahamians, becoming one of the first and most successful of the permanent white settlers. He operated a successful plantation with slave labor where he cultivated sugar cane, bananas, corn, and tropical fruit. Fort Dallas was located on Fitzpatrick’s plantation on the north bank of the river.
After the Second Seminole War ended in 1842, Fitzpatrick’s nephew, William English, re-established the plantation in Miami. He charted the "Village of Miami" on the south bank of the Miami River and sold several plots of land. In 1844, Miami became the county seat, and six years later a census reported that there were ninety-six residents living in the area. The Third Seminole War (1855-1858) was not as destructive as the second one. Even so, it slowed down the settlement of southeast Florida. At the end of the war, a few of the soldiers stayed. Some of the Seminoles remained in the Everglades. However, as late as the 1890s, only a handful of families made their homes in Miami. Many of the settlers were homesteaders, attracted to the area by offers of 160 acres (647,500 m2) of free land by the US federal government."

Southern: Washington DC or Miami?

Which city is more Southern, DC or Miami?

Washington DC, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and Atlanta: Rank 1-5 Most-to-Least Southern

This topic gets brought up every few years. I have never been to Miami, but have met many Miamians and am aware of many of its cultural experts and influences to American culture. From afar, I feel like it's more southern than DC, but both without question have southern roots that are still evident today...

In my experience, people in Miami embrace being considered part of South way more than DC people, who act almost ashamed of it, which is too bad.

This topic has been done before definitely not new. With the Black population, Miami's natives take the cake easily in the Southern category. Both have lots of immigrants, and the white native population to both regions could be a toss up
