Tough question. Both states have great schools but I picked Massachussetts.

California, by a decent margin

Stanford is about equal to Harvard and Cal Tech is about equal to MIT

The California State U system is far and away better than Massachusetts publics though

Wow, it is very close in my mind.

Stanford
Berkely
UCLA
USC
Cal Tech
UCSD
UC Davis
Santa Clara
UCSB
+ a lot more including specialty and lib arts schools

vs

Harvard
MIT
Boston College
Boston University
Tufts
Umass
Northeastern
Clark
+ a lot more including specialty and lib arts schools

Overall though, my vote goes to California

California has a good amount of top-ranked schools, but Mass. has the one-two punch of top universities and a plethora of prestigious liberal arts colleges that are not nearly as prevalent in CA.

California and Massachusetts are actually tied with 7 each in the Top 100 Liberal Arts Colleges list.
However Massachusetts has 3 in the Top 10 including two that are tied at the number 1 position. Amherst and Williams with Wellesley at number 4.
